Clean Water Atlanta is a comprehensive, multi-program initiative designed to improve water quality throughout the City of Atlanta.
Through capital construction programs, Clean Water Atlanta has been instrumental in improving the City’s aging water and sewer infrastructure. The City adopted an aggressive 10-year capital improvement program in 1993, spending more than $1 billion dollars on wastewater and sewer improvements and $100 million dollars to provide capital improvement to the drinking water system. Clean Water Atlanta expands this program to include all projects required to comply with two Federal Consent Decrees and a State Consent Order.
The City will continue to improve water quality throughout metro Atlanta, provide in-depth management of the City’s water resource operations, and maintain the infrastructure. Residents will have access to a resilient and sustainable drinking water supply, as well as clean streams and rivers.
The comprehensive plan will reduce flooding and pollution caused by stormwater, monitor water quality, eliminate sanitary sewer spills, and implement a combined sewer overflow reduction plan.
Five points of commitment have been identified for accomplishing program initiatives:
1. Ensure professional management of the City’s Consent Decree Program
2. Reduce flooding and pollution caused by stormwater
3. SSO (Sanitary Sewer Overflow) Consent Decree compliance
4. CSO (Combined Sewer Overflow) Consent Decree compliance
5. Monitor the water quality of every major stream and river in Atlanta
