A sewage overflow is the intentional or unintentional diversion of flow from a sanitary or combined sewer collection and transmission system. Sewage overflows include discharges to public property or discharges on private property or discharges to state waters and United States waters. Inside home (sewage backup) examples include not being able to flush toilet waste or noticing waste seepage in and around your shower drain, sink, or basement drain.  Outside home (sewage spill) examples include waste overflowing from a manhole or from a sewer clean out.

 

A first responder will be at the location to investigate the possible backup within 8 hours.  If a backup is confirmed, it can take 4-8 hours to contain.  Depending on the cause of the backup, it can take 30-45 days to fully resolve the request, which includes making repairs and restoring the property and/or street.
