Permits for septic tanks and systems are issued by the Fulton County Health Department. Generally, a lot must be at least 43,560 sf (one acre) to qualify for a private septic system. Rebuilding of existing systems on non-conforming lots may be allowed at the discretion of the Fulton County Health Department if public sewer is not available.

If a public sewer exists 200 feet or less from the property, or 500 feet or less from a residence, a septic tank is not allowed, and that residence must connect to the public sewer. Any extension of the public sewer system to serve a lot converting from an existing septic system must have the cost borne by the property owner.

Septic tanks may be allowed for commercial developments by the Fulton County Health Department on a case-by-case basis.

To determine the available options for connecting to the City of Atlanta’s sanitary sewer system, contact the Department of Watershed Management, Site Development, at 404-330-6249.

NOTE: If you are experiencing septic tank problems or wish to file a complaint about a septic tank on another property, please contact Fulton County Environmental Health Services at 404-612-1801.
