The Department of City Planning, Office of Buildings, authorizes activities such as construction, tree removal, sign placement and technical work. The Office of Buildings upholds local, state-wide and national standards to protect against safety risks, such as structural failures, fire hazards caused by electrical and heating systems, and electrical shock. Permits are required for all new construction as well as for specific alterations to existing structures, including structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical changes.

The Office of Buildings consists of the following divisions –

 • Residential Permits
 • Trade Permits
 • Fire Life Safety Group
