Liens are placed on City of Atlanta properties for the purpose of notifying all interested parties that the City of Atlanta has an interest in the property until all debts owed are paid/discharged. A tax lien is a claim or encumbrance placed on a property that authorizes the Tax Commissioner or the Sheriff to take whatever action is necessary and allowed by law to obtain overdue taxes. It is also the first step in taking the property to tax sale.
If there are questions as to whether a lien has been filed on a property, the customer can contact the Fulton County Superior Court Clerk (404-613-5371) or the DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk (404-371-2836) accordingly (depending on the county in which the property is located).
Types of liens placed on properties by the Fulton or DeKalb County Tax Commissioner:
The Fulton and DeKalb County Tax Commissioners bill and collect property taxes and solid waste taxes on behalf of the City of Atlanta for City of Atlanta properties located in Fulton or DeKalb County. Unpaid taxes can result in a lien being placed on the property by the Fulton or DeKalb County Tax Commissioner.
If a lien payoff is requested for one of the above types of liens collected by the Fulton County Tax Commissioner, contact Fulton County at 404-613-6100 or www.FultonAssessor.org.
If a lien payoff is requested for one of the above types of liens collected by the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner, contact DeKalb County at 404-298-4000 or www.DeKalbTax.org.
