The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program is the only Federal program dedicated to the housing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. The HOPWA program, run by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides housing assistance and support services to low-income individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. The goal is to prevent homelessness and improve their quality of life by providing housing and the support needed to live healthier, more stable lives.
Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) is ongoing rental assistance to help individuals and families afford housing in the private rental market and helps provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of renting a home.
This support is designed to ensure you have a safe, stable place to live while managing your health and improving your quality of life. TBRA assist with the following:
Paying for part of your rent, making housing more affordable. The amount of assistance is based on your income and rental costs.
Gives you the option to choose where you want to live, if the housing meets program standards. This allows you to stay in your current home or move to a new one that better meets your needs.
Provide ongoing rental support as long as you remain eligible.
Stable housing supports adherence to HIV treatment plans, improving health and reducing transmission risks.
Encourages self-sufficiency while providing essential support.
