solution home » services » solution Tree or Shrub PruningNeighbor's Branches Encroaching on Property – Pruning a neighbor’s tree that hangs over a property line is allowed under the following circumstance:  • Less than 20% of the live canopy can be pruned by making proper pruning cuts AND the pruning must not make the tree unbalanced or unstable. A permit is not required as long as the aforementioned guideline is followed. NOTE: Removal of any tree that is 6 inches or more in diameter requires inspection and approval by the Department of City Planning, Office of Buildings, Arborist Division. A permit for removal of the tree will be required. Shrub Encroachment on Private Property – The Arborist Division is charged only with protecting trees 6 inches in diameter at breast height and larger. For assistance with shrub encroachment, contact Atlanta Police Department Code Enforcement at 404-330-6190.The City of Atlanta does not recommend private tree removal companies.
